Continuing its collaboration with C o s t i s, Roma Gallery presents the exhibition: conductive ⬄ non-conductive on November the 11th, 2021 (until December the 20th, 2021). The show establishes a discourse between the artist’s well-known lightning and the universe that shaped it. Comprehension of natural phenomena, and therefore that of lightning, is amongst the goals of the artist. Costis has been developing this research for decades, with international public interventions in art and science-oriented establishments. The selection of artworks for conductive⬄non-conductive includes pieces from the ‘80s – early works demonstrating the electronic lightnings – as well as more recent ones. The reinterpretation of natural phenomena taking place in this exhibition validates the artist’s multifaceted personality while also showcasing the narrative of his sublime world. Costis is a poet and a pioneer of works that bridge technology and art. His design and execution of the lightning discharge circuit was so successful that the research team of the French Electricity Company sponsored large solo exhibitions of his in various museums. Identifying art is sometimes more important than comprehending it. As an artist Costis starts by observing and identifying, then he creates and finally challenges. Entering the exhibition area, the visitor experiences an audiovisual environment. It consists of lengthy, abrupt and level pitch bass sounds. The sound is being triggered through motion (of the visitors) or the use of a timer. Costis’ work amazes and seduces the eye of the spectator with challenging energy-based sculptures that are constantly shifting. "He reduces the heavenly phenomenon to the microcosm and the dimensions of man, not to proclaim it a ghastly symbol as primitive man would have done, but to propose a new relationship among nature, art, and technology," states art critic Anna Hatziyannaki. The well-known art critic Pierre Restany, who characterises Costis as promethean, writes at one point in his lengthy discourse on the artist's work: "Costis' enterprise is presented indeed as an exposition of philosophical objects, whose presence has as an ultimate justification the fact - at once simple and formidable - that it incites us to reflect on the dual valence of alchemical fire. A way of making us witness the permanent victory of life over death and of light over the ashes of darkness." Frank Popper refers to Costis as a magician of thunder, in his virtual Museum of Electricity. He based his research on the phenomenon of lightning and placed his artworks within the art eco - technology movement. "His work is a meditation upon nature and light. Lightning, having become a poetic medium, permits the work to become integrated into the sensorial field as well as the mythological and philosophical," writes Xanthippi Skarpia-Heupel, President of the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art. “It is time to change course, to look for what stabilises the electrified relations of words, so that they can be heard in silence, puzzled about their existence, to discover the meaning they represent” as the artist notes in “Excerpts of Silence”. (Excerpt from the unpublished book Hellas Express) As French art critic Pierre Restany suggests in 1992 text The electric non-being: This sensitivity which is ours, and the demonstration of our identity is only a minute part in cosmic energy. Once again it is lent to us, we don’t own it. So we are responsible for that loan and it is the quality of responsibility in our awareness that Costis wants to underline permanently with the expression of his electrical language. I think there is in this attitude a great love of humanity, and a great hope regarding the great alchemy of the world with its redemption and salvation. According to traditional alchemy lightning occurs at the term of the igneous way, the determining element in the planetary salvation and the philosophers’ stone, the demonstration announcing the catalysis by fire changing lead into gold and producing the world’s final salvation. We are no doubt too rational as we only notice in this electric approach the
