Video installation in the framework of New Old Properties at Goethe-Institut Athen Property is the origin and culmination of everything modern.
Discussions around it are certainly not a new phenomenon, but based on its arguable role as an important social institution it has lately become a progressively controversial topic. Studies show that modern ownership has displaced forms of commons while also testifying to the ongoing influence this is having on social segregation predicated on racism, class, and gender inequality. The established idea of property seems to be responsible, at least in part, for a whole series of global crises that are becoming increasingly apparent. On May 5–6, 2022, Goethe-Institut Athen held the international symposium New Old Properties with lectures and debates on ownership in culture and society. Drawing on books from the collection of Hopscotch Reading Room, Berlin, a glossary on the topic of property has been created to accompany the program. In a series of ten short video clips, Siddharta Lokanandi discusses different approaches to shed light on the area of conflict that modern ownership is raising. Challenging western perspectives, he examines various aspects and notions of property through the medium of the written word. Directed by Tal Sterngast Produced by Yutanova Film Music by Kalas Liebfried The installation is accompanied by a reading corner with selected works.
