P gallery | sculpture is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of Gabriella Simossi (1926 - 1999) since her last retrospective in Paris in 1999.

Gabriella Simossi settled permanently in Paris in 1954 with her husband, the painter Yannis Gaïtis. Despite the influence of Modernism, which she embraced selectively while maintaining her sculptural idiosyncrasy, she continued to draw inspiration from ancient Greek sculpture. Thus, her idiom consists of classical forms, yet also reveal the influence of surrealism. Her anthropomorphic figures, experiential and autobiographical in character, are fragmented, mutilated, rendered silent as if to express that reality does not allow for classical perfection. The white color of her sculptures reinforces the effect of incompleteness, alienation and lack of communication, which is slightly attenuated by the sense of humor with which she approached her subjects.

"I love forms. The modelling of a form is important for a sculptor. Forms require work and good knowledge of the material. A sculpture has no external movement, it is static. The power of the sculptor is to give inner movement."
Gabriella Simossi
