Muhajir or Mohajir (Arabic: مهاجر, muhājir; pl. مهاجرون, muhājirūn) is an Arabic word meaning migrant or traveller which is also used in other languages spoken by Muslims, including English. This was the name of the refugee social project that operated in our space before Esto Association. This  discovery  brought us face to face with the 'Bag Mohajer' project which was run by refugees with the help of a German designer. Emersing themselves into their work, these refugees produced bags that travel to places they themselves couldn't  access and used as raw materials remnants from the plastic boats and life vests with which refugees arrived on the Island of Lesbos.
Accidentally learning about  the story of our space through Nassim Muradi -a young refugee from Afghanistan- we consequently tried to get in touch with the people who worked in the space  and to learn more about their activities in the project. Inspired by this story,  we conducted research about the social project Mohajer, as we didn't want our space to be another "white cube", operating outside the topicalities of the neighbourhood.

Mohajer multimedia installation that  is constituted by research-based design pieces and graphics as well as recorded storytellings and the documentary about the 'Bag Mohajer' project directed in 2017 by Adrian Oeser. It operates as a storytelling device carrying memories and creating a narration about the ex-use of the space and the people that used to live in the neighbourhood of Exarcheia. The installation is made in collaboration with ANKAA Project which provides emancipatory courses to refugees children and adults. ANKAA as a former collaborator of the Bag Mohajer project, they provided us materials from the bags and  also got us in contact with some of the people that used to work in our space, like the Iranian designer Shafi Qias.

In this first exhibition, we introduce Esto Association through its past. We seek to retell the history of the place and transform its memory into a tangible narrative: to simultaneously narrate and experience it. The space, the memories, the objects, and the relations between us and the communities around the neighborhood are connected. We want to take the history with us, and turn it into an action for  the present, into a past that "happens" and inevitably determines our future.
