“I’m not sure we speak of a mise en scene or even montage here, but maybe only of a mise en place. At the chain of representation, a slot is left blanc: in general, a script is rehearsed, played represented. Here, we read. It is uncertainty. Representation in eclipse.”
(Marguerite Duras, Le Monde, 16th June 1977)
Mise en place could be translated as ‘set into place’. Only when decontextualized, this has a rather prescriptive tone, as if it were a puzzle. Then in contrast to mise en scene, the stage can be flipped. ‘Under my Bedroom Floor’ is a show in two parts by Frederikke Jul Vedelsby and Billie Meskens.
The exhibition entertains a dialogue from film to text, and back.
Billie Meskens (b. Brussels/Porto Alegre) holds a diploma from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and has worked collaboratively at the Atelier / Zoom Kindermuseum Vienna. She looks forward to being a resident at Wiels in 2023.
Frederikke Jul Vedelsby (b. Cph.) was recently current with the show SEE GIRLS at Ergo Collective in Athens. She holds an MFA from Malmö Art Academy, studied critical writing at Biskops Arnö (SE), was an artist in residency at Can Serrat (ES), Materia Abierta (MX), and is currently an artist in residency at DIA (the Danish institute in Athens).
The two met and started their ongoing conversation at Maumaus Independent Study Program in 2021.
