18:30: "102 Years Out of Synch" by Mikhail Karikis, Performance, 57' (T Building)

102 Years Out of Synch is an audiovisual performance that also exists as a sound installation exploring the striking legendary, literary and cinematic connections between the invention of sustainable energy production, Dante's Inferno, the first Italian feature film, and the sonic imaginary of Hell. This work takes place at the Devil's Valley in Tuscany, the location of the world's oldest and one of the largest geothermal power plants. According to local lore, Dante visited this area in the 14th century and was inspired by its fascinating geology in composing his famous narrative poem. In 102 Years Out of Synch, Mikhail Karikis retraces Dante's footsteps to capture what the poet may have heard during his visit to the area; he has also recorded geothermal energy sounds and the industrial noise omnipresent in the contemporary soundscape. Combining new footage, excerpts from a 1911 silent film directed by Giuseppe de Liguoro, field recordings, storytelling and extended vocals, 102 Years Out of Synch excavates layers of folklore, industrial archaeology, subterranean resonances and aural imaginary.

Mikhail Karikis (b. Thessaloniki), currently lives between London and Lisbon and works with moving image, sound, and performance. Focusing on listening as a creative approach, his practice speaks to the activist imaginary and stimulates our ability to project possible or desirable futures of self-determination and action. Karikis has internationally presented his work in many important contemporary art biennials, museums, and film festivals.
